tapchanger

The transformer tap changer controller controls manually or automatically the OLTC
(transformer on load tap changer), originating tap increase and decrease commands,
in order to keep the power supply voltage practically constant, independently from the
load.

Energy-Efficient Electric Motors,Third Edition

The main purpose of this new edition continues to be to provide
guidelines for selecting and utilizing electric motors on the basis of
energy efficiency and life-cycle cost. In previous editions of this
book, particular emphasis was given to three-phase and single-phase
induction motors in the 1–200 hp range since this was the range
offering maximum opportunities for energy savings. However, since
the second edition, there has been a growing demand in the
direction of solid-state intensive electric motor drives as adjustable
or variable speed drives. New electric motors such as brushless DC
and switched reluctance have also been mass-produced and made
commercially available. The impetus toward this expansion of
power electronics has been provided by recent advancements in the
areas of solid-state switching devices, control electronics, and
advanced microcontrollers, microprocessors, and digital signal
processors (DSP). These advancements facilitate high-tech
applications and enable the introduction of power electronic
converters with highest performance, maximum efficiency, and
minimum volume and weight. In fact, electric motors with advanced
power electronic drivers have real and significant potential for improving not only efficiency and life-cycle cost, but also reliability,
performance, and safety.

Electrical Insulation for Rotating Machines-Design,Evaluation,Aging,Testing,and Repair

This book arose out of the conviction that both designers and users of large motors
and generators would appreciate a single reference work about the electrical insulation
systems used in rotating machines. We also wanted to document how and why
the insulation systems in current use came to be. Since rotating machine insulation
is not the most glamorous field of study in the engineering world, it is sometimes
treated as an afterthought. The result has been a gradual loss of knowledge as innovators
in the field have retired, with few new people specializing in it. We hope that
the archiving of the information in this book will slow this gradual loss of knowledge
and be a useful starting point for future innovations.
This book is unique in that two of the authors (Alan Boulter and Ian Culbert) have a machine design background, whereas the other two have experience as primarily
users of machines. With luck, both users and manufacturers of machines can
find their interests represented here.

HANDBOOK INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL

The Department of Energy Fundamentals Handbook entitled Instrumentation and Control
was prepared as an information resource for personnel who are responsible for the operation of
the Department's nuclear facilities. A basic understanding of instrumentation and control is
necessary for DOE nuclear facility operators, maintenance personnel, and the technical staff to
safely operate and maintain the facility and facility support systems. The information in the
handbook is presented to provide a foundation for applying engineering concepts to the job. This
knowledge will help personnel more fully understand the impact that their actions may have on the
safe and reliable operation of facility components and systems.

The Instrumentation and Control handbook consists of seven modules that are contained
in two volumes. The following is a brief description of the information presented in each module
of the handbook.

Handbook of Modern Sensors Physics, Designs, and Applications

This book is about devices commonly called sensors. The invention of a microprocessor
has brought highly sophisticated instruments into our everyday lives.
Numerous computerized appliances, of which microprocessors are integral parts,
wash clothes and prepare coffee, play music, guard homes, and control room temperature.
Microprocessors are digital devices that manipulate binary codes generally
represented by electric signals. Yet, we live in an analog world where these devices
function among objects that are mostly not digital. Moreover, this world is generally
not electrical (apart from the atomic level). Digital systems, however complex and
intelligent they might be, must receive information from the outside world. Sensors
are interface devices between various physical values and electronic circuits who
“understand” only a language of moving electrical charges. In other words, sensors
are the eyes, ears, and noses of silicon chips. Sensors have become part of everyone’s
life. In the United States alone, they comprise a $12 billion industry.
